The University of Pikeville is a private, liberal arts university located in Pikeville, Kentucky. Founded in 1889 by the Presbyterian Church, it is committed to offering a broad liberal arts and sciences education, providing opportunities for students to develop their full academic potential and prepare for specific careers. International students can join the Intensive English Institute which offers courses to undergraduates and graduates and helps them prepare for success in university academic coursework. All international students are welcomed and supported through the Global Education Office, which helps them settle in from the moment they arrive in the US.
The Intensive English Institute
The Intensive English Institute provides non-native English speakers, both undergraduate and graduate, with the English skills necessary for success in university academic coursework. The Institute provides academic support as well as a cultural support for students as they acculturate into academic life.
The Institute is a flexible digital learning space which provides instruction in five areas of language proficiency: writing, reading, listening, speaking and grammar. Teaching is student-centered and done in small class sizes, creating a collaborative class environment and enabling personalized instruction so students learn in a comfortable environment at their own pace.
The Institute also provides exposure to American culture, enriching students’ college experience. Students have opportunities to enjoy time spent with local families, hiking in the Appalachian Mountains, and planned excursions around the United States. An annual trip to Washington D.C., camping, shopping and cultural experiences are all opportunities students can participate in to enrich their university life while studying at the University of Pikeville.
