Highbury College is one of the leading further education colleges in the UK, and it maintains some of the highest success rates among graduates. Located in the city of Portsmouth on England’s south coast, Highbury was awarded Association of Colleges (AoC) International Charter, placing it in an elite class of the UK’s top-performing colleges.
Highbury stands on a strong network of international partnerships. The college works with organisations and governments across the globe – in the Far East, South-East Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Europe. In all cases, the emphasis of its courses and curriculum is on gaining practical skills that boost employability.
Portsmouth is the only island city in the UK, and it boasts a spectacular seaside location and a comfortable climate. This is a popular holiday destination complete with monuments and historic naval vessels, and nothing compares to the panoramic views of the harbour from Spinnaker Tower. A host of shopping and dining venues rounds out Portsmouth’s list of offerings.
Highbury College operates a variety of English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) and English as a foreign language (EFL) courses. Classes are designed for students preparing to enter university (ages 16 to 18) as well as for adult learners who are based in the Portsmouth area.
Ofsted, the inspection agency that rates educational institutes in the UK and reports to Parliament, recently rated Highbury’s ESOL coursework as ‘outstanding’. Furthermore, all of the English-language coursework at the college is accredited by the British Council, ensuring the highest-quality instruction and student support.
Course offerings include exam preparation, English for Academic Purposes, study tours, summer school programmes and bespoke English courses. These are the four major streams of English-language instruction offered at Highbury:
Pre-entry and Entry 1
This course targets beginners along with students who need extra assistance with writing in English. It covers basic reading, writing, speaking and listening, and also branches out into computer skills and expressing mathematical equations in English.
Entry 2 / Entry 3
The next level of English coursework targets pre-intermediate level students and includes extras such as an Edexcel Certificate in Personal and Social Development, City and Guilds ESOL qualifications and online learning skills.
The final ESOL course covers the same topics listed above in greater depth and includes an NOCN Diploma in Level 1.
The EFL course is best-suited for students that aspire to higher education in the UK. Students develop their language skills while improving their grasp of vocabulary, grammar, spelling and pronunciation.
