YSU is proud to be the first, and only, STEM College in the State of Ohio, as well as the second STEM College in the whole of the USA. The University’s undergraduate engineering program has been ranked among the top 25% in the world by US News and the World Report, giving it global recognition and maintaining its reputation for academic prestige. The Youngstown Business Incubator is the Number 1 ranked university-affiliated business incubator in the world, and YSU STEM has faculty, staff and students constantly involved in their projects. YSU is also the closest university in the country to America Makes; the only United States National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute.

The University has partnered with more than 100 businesses, including international companies such as Siemens and NASA for internships, co-ops and job placements that greatly enhance its students’ employability. YSU’s engineering students are renowned for their incredible skill and performance in undergraduate competitions, for example:

  • Civil Engineering- Steel Bridge and Concrete Canoe have placed 1st in regional competitions
  • Chemical Engineering- CHEM Car has placed 2nd in regional competitions
  • Electrical Engineering- Green Energy Challenge team has placed 1st in national competition
  • Mechanical Engineering- Baja Car has placed 12th in Suspension and Traction and 32nd overall in international competitions

Centre for Innovation in Additive Manufacturing

YSU’s Centre for Innovation in Additive Manufacturing (CIAM) was created to advance research, education, workforce development and industry partnerships in the emerging field of 3D printing. CIAM is the focal point for additive manufacturing activities, providing resources not only for the College of STEM but also for other academic divisions, including the arts and health sciences. Students can benefit from the Centre’s state-of-the-art technology and resources in a cutting-edge field of engineering.

Supporting international students

Youngstown State University welcomes international students from around the globe. They offer a supportive academic environment where students build lifelong relationships with other students and professors, with opportunities for research projects, academic competitions, and internships. International students with strong academic records are eligible for several academic scholarships, and academically qualified international students who have not satisfied English proficiency requirements may be eligible for conditional admission— YSU offers an English Language Institute for students who want to improve their English language skills before taking university classes in the United States. YSU also offers support with academic or personal concerns.
