Is this mystery figure caught on camera part of a mythical Indonesian tribe?

FOOTAGE of a mysterious being spotted in the northern tip of Sumatra has the Internet abuzz with theories as to the individual’s origin.

According to Jakarta Post, the viral video shows a half-naked man running down a dirt track in Banda Aceh and was filmed by a group of motor trail bikers.

The lead rider falls from his bike after he is startled by a pint-sized figure on the track. The bald, half-naked man, seen holding a long spear-like stick, encounters the riders and takes off running incredibly fast down the dirt road. The riders attempt to pursue the figure but he disappears into surrounding shrubbery before they have the chance to catch up.

The video, uploaded to YouTube by Fredography, has since gone viral and has been viewed over 2.5 million times.

The mysterious figure has sent the Internet alight with theories ranging from the plausible to the bizarre.

The most popular theory is that the man is part of the Mante tribe, an ethnic group that is one of Aceh’s urban legends passed down the generations about the origins of modern-day Aceh people, however there has been no scientific investigation to establish the existence of the tribe.

The only record of the supposed tribe was in the 17th century, when it was claimed two Mante tribesmen were captured and presented to the Sultan.

But most people think the Mante people are simply legend.

The squat appearance of the man in the video has fuelled this theory as members of the Mante are believed to be shorter than the average person.

The video has even had some netizens questioning if the figure is human.

There are thought to be seven tribes who still live in the northern province of Aceh.

The groups, who live in remote stretches of Sumatra, are mainly farmers and gatherers who live off the land.

It is thought that there are as many as 150,000 of the tribesmen living in Aceh.
