Thailand: McDonald’s apologizes over rat sighting at Hat Yai outlet

POPULAR restaurant franchise McDonald’s has apologized to its Thai customers following the sighting of a large rat dashing across a dessert counter at one of its outlets.

The video of the rat sighting, which went viral, caused outrage among netizens after it was seen rummaging through the toppings which were on display at the counter in a shopping mall in the city of Hat Yai in southern Thailand.

The fast food giant blamed the incident on local sewers.

“We checked security footage and found that the accusation is true. A rat ran into the restaurant,” McDonald’s said in a statement.

It said it learned of the incident the day after the video was posted and immediately ordered the restaurant to conduct a thorough cleaning and increase pest control measures.

The statement said the neighborhood is a “breeding area for rats and insects.”
