A SUBWAY station in the Taiwanese capital of Taipei was the scene of a tragic and gruesome murder of a three-year-old girl who was decapitated in what is said to be a random killing.
According to reports in Taiwanese media, the killing happened in full view of her mother. The man who carried out the vicious attack had been detained.
The man, who is known as Wang, was reported to have grabbed the girl from behind and decapitated her with a cleaver shortly before noon.
The attack occured while the victim and her mother were on their way to an MRT rail station in northern Taipei’s Neihu District, to meet the girl’s grandfather and two of her siblings for lunch, according to the Taipei Times.
The girl, whose surname was Liu, was riding her bicycle just outside the subway station when she was attacked. The mother was only one metre behind the victim when the bicycle got stuck on a ledge. The mother believed the attacker was going to help her with the bicycle but instead he attacked the child with the cleaver.
The government-run Central News Agency said the 33-year-old Wang had an arrest record for drug crimes and had been treated for mental illness.
Violent crime is rare in Taiwan.
