Taiwan: Transit cards featuring Japanese porn star sell out in hours

A special edition swipe card for Taiwan’s mass transit featuring the clothed image of a Japanese porn star sold out within hours overnight via a telephone hotline, despite a storm of opposition.

Taiwan’s EasyCard Corp. says on its website that it sold its full run of 15,000 card sets by 4.18am Tuesday after beginning phone orders from midnight.

The stored value cards — also used for convenience store purchases — feature images of Yui Hatano, a 27-year-old Japanese woman who local media say likes Taiwan and wants to help the card company’s charity donation scheme.

Critics campaigned against the cards, saying the images disrespect women and send inappropriate messages to children. Many stores declined to sell the cards, and the company ended up offering them via hotline only, backtracking on an earlier commitment to withdraw the cards entirely.

Hatano defended her appearance on the limited edition cards last week.

“Just because I am an adult video porn star… does it mean that I cannot pay a debt of gratitude to my beloved Taiwan?” she said, in a statement quoted by the Focus Taiwan news website.

Some of the money raised by the sale of the cards is expected go to charity.

The company on Tuesday issued the ‘Devil’ edition of the card, the sexier of the two editions which sows Hatano in a black dress. The ‘Angel’ edition, featuring the porn star in a white dress, will be released in mid-September.

Hatano was recently ranked the No. 9 porn star in Asia by erotic website Xvideos.com.

It is not the first a Japanese porn star has appeared in unlikely places in recent years. Last year education authorities in Thailand were forced to recall copies of a high school maths book after it emerged that the ‘teacher’ on the front cover was in fact a Japanese porn actress.
