Indonesian clothing company in hot water over sexist washing instructions

An Indonesian clothing manufacturer has issued an apology for printing a message on shirts it produced for a top flight Indonesian football club, which read: “Washing instructions: Give this shirt to a woman. It’s her job.”

The controversial “washing instructions” appeared on shirts of Indonesian Super League team Pusamania Borneo.

Salvo Sports issued an apology on Twitter Sunday after wide criticism on social media. It is not clear whether the apology was meant to coincide with International Women’s Day.

In a series of tweets (below), the clothing company apologised for any offence it had caused, say that “it had no intent to demean women”.

It added that it gave the washing instruction because many men aren’t good at washing clothes and “women are more versed in the matter”.
