Malaysia’s badminton shocked by doping news

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Malaysia’s badminton association says it is shocked that one of its country’s players has failed a doping test but will not reveal the identity of the athlete until the result is confirmed by a second round of tests.

Local media reports have identified the player as current world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei.

Mohamad Norza Zakaria, deputy chairman of the badminton association of Malaysia, told media Sunday that the news was “earth shattering to us.”

Mohamad said the player tested positive for the banned substance dexamethasone during a random test at the world championships in August.

He said world badminton authorities would carry out tests on a second blood or urine sample on Nov. 4 or Nov. 5 to confirm the initial test result.
