Greece to help ‘hundreds’ of Chinese leave Libya

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — A Greece government official says his country will help China with the evacuation of “hundreds” of its citizens from escalating violence in Libya.

The official, who asked not to be named because details of the operation are still being finalized, told The Associated Press Thursday that a Greek merchant vessel has been chartered by the Chinese government, but gave no further details.

Greece has closed its embassy in Tripoli, the Libyan capital, and is sending a navy frigate to pick up staff members as well as about 70 Greeks and dozens of others from China, Cyprus, Britain and Malta after their governments requested assistance, according to Greek Defense Ministry and other government officials.

The frigate, Salamis, was due to dock outside Tripoli later Wednesday.
