TOKYO (AP) — Japanese musician Ryuichi Sakamoto has been diagnosed with throat cancer and has canceled his upcoming performances to focus on his health.
Sakamoto, 62, who shared an Oscar for Bernardo Bertolucci’s “The Last Emperor” score, announced his illness Thursday on his official website.
He apologized for the inconvenience caused by the cancelations but said he needed to take time off from work to concentrate on treating his illness.
Sakamoto rose to fame as a member of the electronic pop band Yellow Magic Orchestra in the 1970s and 1980s. Since the March 2011 tsunami set off a nuclear catastrophe in Japan, he has been vocal against nuclear power.
Sakamoto also acted in and wrote the score for the 1983 film “Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence,” directed by Nagisa Oshima.
