Gunmen kidnap two people in Malaysia’s Sabah state

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Malaysian police say gunmen have seized two workers from a fish farm on Borneo island, the latest kidnapping in the area despite increased security.

The kidnapping early Monday marked the third since April in Malaysia’s Sabah state. The incident highlights the persistent security threats in the state, which is short boat ride from the southern Philippines.

The English-language newspaper The Star said on its website that a Malaysian fish breeder and his Filipino worker were abducted by two Filipino gunmen from their farm, and were believed to have been taken to the southern Philippines in a speedboat. It said the Filipino worker managed to escape by jumping off the boat.

Sabah police chief Hamza Taib confirmed the kidnapping and said details would be released later.
