The best of both worlds … introducing National University of Ireland Maynooth

The International Office at NUIM is delighted to have this online space to keep you posted about news and events, academic programmes and research, and other activities at our University. In this first post, we would like to introduce NUIM and give you a sense of the University and its beautiful campus.

Spotlight on NUIM

National University of Ireland Maynooth’s beautiful and historic campus is located 25km from the capital city of Dublin. Maynooth is Ireland’s only university town, and it is home to a vibrant local community. The town traces its historical significance back to the 12th century with the establishment of the castle that can still be seen at the gates of the University. The spacious campus contains a mix of historical nineteenth century Georgian building and world-class modern laboratory and library facilities between the North and South campuses.

NUIM is Ireland’s fastest-growing university with 8,500 students from over 90 countries. It is located adjacent to Ireland’s technology hub, also known as “Ireland’s Silicon Valley”. This is home in Europe to companies such as Intel, Pfizer, Hewlett Packard, Facebook and Google, to name but a few. NUIM has strong ties to industry, working with over 50 multinational companies on research projects, providing guest speakers, seminars, and internships.

With a tradition of academic excellence that can be traced back to 1795, NUIM counts two Nobel Prize winners amongst its academic staff and alumni. It currently maintains the best record of research commercialisation amongst Irish universities, it is the top institution in Ireland regarding research funding won per academic, and it has a very strong graduate employment record.

The University’s academic departments are organised into three Faculties – Arts, Celtic Studies and Philosophy; Science and Engineering; and Social Sciences – with each offering a wide variety of undergraduate degrees and postgraduate taught and research programmes. The University has recently undergone a major phase of expansion of research, teaching and service facilities.

NUIM was recently recognised as one of the leading new universities in the world, ranked #67 in the Times Higher Education (THE) 100 under 50 rankings. It was also the first international university outside of North America to be included in the Princeton Review’s (2012 edition), and it has also featured in the 2013 and 2014 editions. By providing a gateway to the leading minds of Ireland’s past and an innovative focus on the future, NUIM offers the best of both worlds to its students.

A Student Experience that is second to none

Students love Maynooth: the University is renowned for its supportive educational ethos and for providing excellence in teaching and learning. Our small class sizes and one-to-one guidance from senior lecturers and global researchers challenges and inspires students, giving them the support they need to reach their potential and to build a stand out resumé.

In a recent International Student Barometer Survey, NUIM was ranked third in the world and first in Ireland overall in a major global survey of international students’ experience:

  • International students have ranked Maynooth first overall in Ireland and seventh globally in the category of Teaching and Learning. The University has also excelled in the categories of Arrival and Support Services and Living Experience.
  • Maynooth was ranked first in Ireland in terms of Orientation as a University, Orientation to the Local Area, the Opportunities to Meet Academic and Support Staff, Internet Access, Medical Centre, and Student Advisory Service.  Over 90% of international students studying at NUIM would encourage their peers to study here, compared to the national average of 85%.

NUIM provides a student-friendly environment within which students can learn, while also ensuring that all student have an experience that will benefit them not just academically, but also personally. Student support services include the Academic Advisory Service, Medical and Counselling Centre, Residence Office, the Career Development Centre, and the Students’ Union. The new Library extension opened in 2013, and with a 6.4 million Euro investment in sports and recreation facilities, NUIM also provides excellent opportunities to make the most of social, cultural and sporting life on campus.
