JAIPUR, India (AP) — Lalit Modi has been declared winner of elections for president of the Rajasthan Cricket Association despite being under a life ban from the sport’s national governing body.
Modi was declared winner Tuesday after a court-appointed observer opened results which had been sealed on orders from the Supreme Court.
The court was hearing a matter on whether Modi was eligible to contest the polls, held Dec. 19 last year, since he is banned by the Board of Control for Cricket in India for alleged improprieties in running the Indian Premier League.
Modi is based in London with his passport revoked by the government over financial irregularities and taxation issues.
The BCCI has threatened sanctions against the RCA, which said it could not stop Modi from contesting the election due to state government rules.
