SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea’s coast guard says a Mongolian-flagged cargo ship carrying more than a dozen North Korean crew members is missing off its southern coast.
A coast guard statement says the 4,300-ton-class ship is missing after sending a distress signal early Friday in waters about 130 kilometers (80 miles) south of the southern port city of Yeosu.
Coast guard officers say three people have been rescued in the area and they’ve identified themselves as three of the 16 North Korean crew members aboard the ship.
The statement says the ship carrying iron ire was sailing to China from the North Korean port city of Chongjin.
It says South Korea’s coast guard has mobilized 13 vessels and six aircraft to search for the ship and its crew members.
