IOC commission surveys Tokyo 2020 Olympic plans

TOKYO (AP) — The International Olympic Committee’s coordination commission concluded its first working-level talks with organizers of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics on Friday.

Commission chairman John Coates toured the venue sites for the games and met with members of Tokyo’s organizing committee during a three-day visit to the Japanese capital.

Coates praised the appointment of 10 women among the Tokyo organizing committee’s 34-member executive board, and called for further efforts toward diverse representation in the Olympic preparations.

Tokyo’s Olympic committee, headed by 76-year-old former prime minister Yoshiro Mori, had come under scrutiny for the lack of female and younger members on the executive board.

The coordination commission serves as a link between the various Olympic arms and Tokyo’s organizing committee, and will hold periodic meetings as preparations continue.
