In pictures: Scenes from the ‘Bangkok Shutdown’ protests

Anti-government protesters have flooded Thailand’s capital city in a bid to overthrow Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and derail parliamentary elections slated for Feb. 2.

Protest leaders have called Yingluck a puppet for her millionaire brother, Thaksin, a former prime minister who was ousted in a military coup in 2006. They also claim that Yingluck’s Pheu Thai Party, which remains popular among the rural poor in north and northeast Thailand, has illegally purchased votes in order to stay in power.

Demonstrators intend to peacefully occupy Bangkok until the end of January while crippling the functions of the current government.
