Vietnam dissident ends prison hunger strike

HANOI, Vietnam (AP) — The wife of a jailed Vietnamese legal scholar says her husband is ending a hunger strike against alleged poor treatment by prison officials.

Nguyen Thi Duong Ha says Cu Huy Ha Vu told her Friday morning that he is ending the strike after receiving a written reply to his complaints from officials at the prison in northern Thanh Hoa province.

He began fasting on May 27 in an effort to force them to answer his letters of complaint.

A prison official declined to comment Friday.

Vu, 55, is among the ruling Communist Party’s highest-profile critics. He was arrested in 2010 after attempting to sue the prime minister twice.

His father Cu Huy Can was a revolutionary poet and a minister in the government of Vietnam’s founding president, Ho Chi Minh.
