Applying for Arts and Humanites PhD Funding

While many of my posts will be about the joys of an Arts and Humanities PhD, there’s no denying that it’s an expensive undertaking. Unlike in the sciences or engineering, there is little private funding for a PhD that basically involves reading every day, so your main hope is applying to the AHRC (Arts and Humanities Research Council). AHRC grants are amazing – full fees plus a very generous tax-free living allowance – but they are like gold dust: there is only one available each year for Spanish and Latin American Language and Culture at King’s, for example.
