Second Malaysian confirmed dead in Algeria

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Malaysia’s government says a second citizen has been confirmed dead in the takeover of a natural gas plant in Algeria by Islamist militants.

Five Malaysians were working for a Japanese engineering company at the plant in the Sahara Desert when it was seized by al-Qaida-linked militants on Jan. 16. The militants held scores of foreigners from a number of countries hostage for four days until Algerian special forces stormed the plant.

Three Malaysians survived and one was confirmed dead when the hostage crisis ended.

Malaysia’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement Saturday that the fifth man, who was earlier reported missing, also was dead.

Algeria says at least 37 hostages and 29 militants were killed.
