The University of Derby offers different hospitality courses at both an undergraduate and postgraduate level. Students can start their courses in either September or January. The courses starting in January 2013 are:
You will be taught at our Buxton campus, a Centre of Vocational Excellence for Catering and Hospitality Education. Buxton is a unique site with many amazing facilities. The Dome Restaurant offers you the opportunity to gain real experience in providing both restaurant service and the chance to have the responsibility of team management. We also have seven industry standard kitchens that you will use as part of your course. The practical experience that you will gain coincides with our aim to develop you as a leader of the future.
To support our emphasis on real world learning each of the hospitality courses at The University of Derby give student’s access to membership of the Educational Membership Scheme of the Institute of Hospitality, which provides students with an excellent opportunity to network and make industry contacts.
Throughout your course you will have a personal tutor, offering you a regular appointment scheme which enables them to provide you with the help and support that you need in order to achieve the best you can.
The course also offers you the chance to meet guest lecturers. Recently the University hosted an event by top Chinese TV chef He Liang. The event showcased some of Mr Liang’s abilities including showing students how to chop and carve vegetables to a standard of a five star hotel. After the event Mr Liang said that “The standard and layout of the university and college kitchens is impressive. It’s a marvellous experience to visit the UK and Buxton.”
The quality of our courses is reflected in our graduates. One graduate, Alan Hill helped to win his pub a bronze award in the Best Pub experience category at the Enjoy England Excellence awards ceremony. Alan said of his achievement “Without doubt gaining a professional qualification from such a reputable educational institution gave me confidence I needed when first setting out in the real world of catering.” Read more about Alan’s success here.
