When you study at The University of Derby you experience more than just the academic side of the university experience. The city offers many different ways to spend your free time, such as the Westfield Shopping Centre and a Showcase Cinema Deluxe. However, in addition to these, our student’s union offers you a way to meet people with like-minded interests through our societies.

A society is an excellent way to meet new friends as you will be joining a group of people who have the same interests as you. A society isn’t just a chance to meet and talk with people however, there is a lot more to it. Societies offer you the chance to attend different events throughout the year, ranging from social events to performances and even beginning and end of year events.

The range of societies available to join at the University of Derby  is wide and varied, so there is sure to be one for you. As well as our course related societies you may be interested in joining our International society if you are based in Derby or our Multicultural society if you are based in Buxton. Both societies offer you the chance to meet other students like you who have moved to England to study with us. The societies offer you the chance to visit popular places within the UK in order to help you understand British culture.

Other popular societies include Musicians and Theatre. Musicians is a society with varying types of musical interests within it. Our award winning Theatre society is open to not only experienced performers but also those who want to try something new and even those who are interested in watching performances.

Our Modern Languages society offers students the chance to meet others who have an interest in languages or people who speak more than one language. This society gives you the chance to practice your language skills on others as well as potentially learning new ones. This society could also help your academic studies.
