Taiwanese youth losing taste for China fight

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — A recent magazine survey in Taiwan says that a plurality of young people would be unwilling to go to battle to fight for the country’s self-rule if China attacked.

The trend is in sharp contrast to the time before Taiwan and China began their process of detente.

Back then, evidence of military preparedness on the self-governing island was everywhere: Huge posters calling for the armed liberation of the mainland, media warnings about communist saboteurs, school yard drills keyed to neutralizing the communist enemy.

The survey, published this week, shows that only 38.7 percent of Taiwanese aged 12-17 would be ready to see either themselves or a family member fight if a new war broke out, while 44.3 percent would not.
