Located at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney, the AGSM MBA has been one of Australia’s top ranked MBA programs for the past three decades. Established in 1977 by the University at the behest of the Australian Government, the AGSM MBA has produced many global leaders and is consistently ranked amongst the top MBA programs in the world.

The AGSM MBA program is ranked the 35th best MBA program in the world this year and number one in Australia for the last five years (Financial Times UK Global MBA Rankings). Not only is this the best MBA program that Australia has to offer, international students enjoy an enviable lifestyle here, with Sydney consistently ranked one of the most liveable cities in the world and a great place for students to network and make business connections.

Last month, the Forbes biennial rankings named AGSM’s full-time MBA as the best in Australia, and ranked it ninth worldwide among non-US programs. The MBA was the only Australian program to make the ranking, which estimated that MBA graduates had an average pre-MBA salary of US$59,000, which rose to US$181,000 five years after graduation. Not only are AGSM MBA graduates well paid, they are also eminently employable. Eighty-one percent of graduates from the 2010 MBA program either found employment or received job offers within three months of graduation.

The AGSM MBA program was the first in Australia to be accredited by the Association to Advance Collegial Schools of Business (AACSB) and has achieved the EQUIS global quality assurance accreditation.  The program concentrates on helping students prepare for leadership roles in business and government. The focus here is on real-world learning that combines traditional classroom teaching with case studies and teamwork to develop management skills, encourage critical thinking and sharpen decision-making ability.

Faculty delivering the AGSM MBA are internationally renowned thought-leaders and research experts in the field of business management. The program draws upon the teaching strength of the Australian School of Business – with over 200 full-time and adjunct faculty.

The AGSM MBA is ideally suited to talented young managers, entrepreneurs and business professionals seeking to accelerate their career journey into senior management and leadership roles, and fully realise their leadership potential.

However, securing a place in one of the world’s best MBA programs does not come easily. Entry into the AGSM MBA Program is extremely competitive. Applicants should have an undergraduate degree and two years’ work experience, or six years’ work experience if they do not have an undergraduate degree. A successful Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) score is also required.

While competition for places is tough, those who do succeed can rest assured that they will be studying with the best minds of their generation and will receive one of the best MBA qualifications available.  In addition, a large majority of full-time MBA students receive scholarships, with AGSM offering MBA Excellence scholarships, MBA Community Spirit scholarships and MBA Women in Leadership scholarships

Program Structure
The AGSM MBA has a two-stage structure – the Core Phase and the Elective Phase.

Core Phase – This phase consists of nine core courses: Foundations of Management (3 week intensive); Accounting; Data Analysis and Decision Making; Economics; Finance; Marketing Management; Operations Management; and Organisational Behaviour Strategy. At the end of the core subject phase there is a two-week intensive group study initiative called the ‘AGSM MBA Integrative Experience’. This study group is designed to allow MBA students to combine all their core management skill sets and learning to date.

Elective Phase – This phase provides an opportunity for students to tailor their MBA experience. Courses may be chosen from the following areas: Accounting; Finance; Marketing; Organisational Behaviour; Statistics and Operations Management; and General Management. Students may also complete an approved Individual Study in Management (ISM) as part of their elective phase – working under the supervision of a faculty member.  Group project work through ‘live’ Management Projects also forms part of this elective phase, offering students the opportunity to apply their learning in the real business world.

Living in Sydney
Sydney offers so much for the international student, thanks to its sprawling diversity and wealth of options. The city itself contains 4 million people, many of whom come from countries across the world. This multiculturalism means that there are a wide variety of restaurants, shows, festivals and districts in which you can find a taste of Asia, Europe, Africa or the Americas. The international student living in Sydney is never too far away from a small taste of home.

Despite its size, Sydney is very easy to get around. With its extensive bus, rail and ferry network, getting somewhere is simply a matter of taking the right route. The University of Sydney is centrally located and students will be able to get there regardless of where they are living around the city. There is also a light rail system in the central business district which goes to some of the area’s most important sites.

Finally, Sydney boasts of an impressive range of landmarks and activities. From the iconic Harbour Bridge to the world-famous Bondi Beach, there is no shortage of things to do in the city. For a bit of culture and history, the Australian Museum and the Art Gallery of New South Wales will expand your mind and your knowledge. As for those who love their sport, they can enjoy a match or two at Sydney Olympic Park or the Sydney Cricket Ground.

AGSM MBA Alumni Testimonials

Pallavi Sengupta (India), MBA Class of 2003

I chose AGSM because I was seeking knowledge and exposure in diversity. The experience in AGSM was the catalyst of my professional career; I returned to my professional life personally and intellectually stimulated, and with a positive sense of direction and energy that impacted my performance at work and earned me a three-fold promotion and payrise. The wisdom and ideas that the faculty presented and the class debated with are still thought provoking. Furthermore the lifelong bonds formed with both the faculty and classmates make it an association I can always consider family.
