News Limited distances itself from phone scandal

SYDNEY (AP) — The Australian subsidiary of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. says it has no connection with the phone hacking scandal in Britain.

A statement Wednesday by News Limited Chief Executive John Hartigan says the company is willing to answer any questions about its local operations.

The statement sought to distance the company from the controversy after Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard said earlier Wednesday that News Limited has some “hard questions” to answer.

Hartigan noted “the prime minister’s comments seek to draw a link between News Corporation operations in the UK and those here in Australia.” He says the “comments were unjustified and regrettable.”
