Chalmers University of Technology

Sweden’s Chalmers University of Technology is home to two campuses, 17 departments, 2,500 employees, 200 research groups and 11,000 students. With a large number of these students drawn from countries around the world, Chalmers is reputed for its extensive research and education efforts in the fields of environment and sustainable development.

Situated in Gothenburg, the university focuses on research and education in several facets of environmental science and is a driving force behind discoveries in this area of expertise. Chalmers has been ranked in the top 75 universities for engineering and technology in the world according to the 2010 Academic Ranking of World Universities.

Founded in 1829, the university was inaugurated due to a large donation by William Chalmers. The university remained a private body till 1937 when it became a state-owned institute. Years later, in 1994, Chalmers returned to being a private institution.

Chalmers works towards a sustainable future with a vision that hopes to inspire others to adopt a more open approach to find technical solutions. The academic environment at the university is borne out of a significant relationship with industry and society in an effort to internationalise education for higher standards of teaching and research.

Chalmers hosts several exceptional departments, graduate schools and has advanced in key areas of research that have created impressions not just in Sweden, but across the world. A few of these have been detailed below:

The Department of Energy and Environment
This department has been recognised for its work in the field of environment and sustainable development. It offers a global perspective and conducts research in:

  • Energy technology and energy conversion
  • Development, methods and tools for analysis of technical systems, related to both the environment, sustainable development and energy.

The department provides programmes in these and related fields.

Energy and Environment
This graduate school, part of the Department of Energy and Environment, offers specialisations in seven areas including Environmental Systems Analysis and Physical Resource Theory. The school is geared towards research in the field and has been recognised for its efforts. Students seeking admission to the programme need to have completed at least four years of university study with emphasis on the fields of science and technology.

Environmental Sciences
Coordinated by the Centre for Environment and Sustainability, this postgraduate programme offers an education in environmental studies for all students at Chalmers University of Technology. The programme looks towards providing trans-disciplinary research, which is one of the reasons behind the Graduate School of Environmental Sciences recruiting graduates from other disciplines.

Built Environment
Chalmers produces high-quality findings in the area of Built Environment, providing a comprehensive research community that explores human and built environment. Chalmers Built Environment boasts of several national and international partners ranging from academics to practitioners in the fields of environment, climate and energy, among others. Combining technical knowledge with design experience, this division constantly works towards finding answers for some of the world’s most serious challenges.

Environmental Science and Sustainable Development
Contributing to sustainable development is an important goal for Chalmers and the institute works endlessly to achieve this aim. This is based on the progressive research and teaching carried out in the different departments of the institute.

And it is not just environmental science, but environmental questions that are addressed.

According to the university website:

A small sample of the areas of strength at Chalmers are:

  • Climate questions in a wide sense
  • The energy field, such as alternative energy systems and their prerequisites on the market, the development of energy systems and energy efficiency
  • Environmental systems analysis, development of methods and tools for the analysis of technical systems and products, as well as consumption patterns and indicators of sustainability
  • Material flows, e.g. raw materials, energy, cultivation problems
  • Risk assessment, e.g. methods for decontaminating polluted land
  • Logistics and transport systems, both regional and in urban environments
  • Urban waterways, access and cleaning
  • Sustainable construction, e.g. interior environment, design, urban development

Some of its units specialising in environment science include Alliance for Global Sustainability (AGS), Center for Environment and Sustainability, GMV, Chalmers Environmental Initiative and the European Panel on Sustainable Development (EPSD).
