Philippines orders ban on tainted Taiwanese drinks

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Philippine health officials have banned the sale and importation of Taiwanese beverages believed to contain a chemical that is harmful to male reproductive organs.

Food and Drug Administration spokeswoman Joyce Cirunay said Wednesday that sports drinks, juices, soft drinks, teas, jams and jellies that are on a list of Taiwanese products possibly tainted with DEHP should be removed from stores and supermarkets nationwide.

Taiwanese authorities have said several companies illegally added DEHP, which is used in the manufacture of plastics, to beverages and health supplements and have ordered the products pulled from store shelves there.

There have been no confirmed reports of ill effects from the beverages.
