So carrying on a discussion that was getting off the ground on Twitter, I wanted people to pipe in with their thoughts on Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto (ZAB).
My view is that when you take into account deep and meaningful political choices he made, such as campaigning on the hatred of India, such as his very real decision to prioritize political power in the West over the unity of Pakistan (the “break your legs speech”), such as his bowing down to the religious right on things like Ahmedi rights that are with us until today, it really makes you wonder why he enjoys such a charitable and generous legacy.
I am prepared to concede that I wasn’t around then, and that his rhetoric and style of politics may have been very refreshing and represented a real structural change. But then, wasn’t Mujib just as charismatic? Didn’t Mujib open as many doors to previously disenfranchised people? What am I missing here?
Have at it. Tell me what you think.
