DAVAO CITY – A female rebel surrendered to the authorities along with her cousin to take care of her ailing mother.

The rebel surrenderees were identified as Analou Tanelo Ayagina and Jimwel Tanelon. Both were members of the Guerrilla Front 33 and residents of Purok 5, Sitio Kambasi, Barangay El Salvador in New Corella, Davao del Norte.

The two rebels surrendered on Friday, November 12, to the peace and development team of the 3rd Special Forces Battalion deployed in New Corella.

Lt. Col. Medel Aguilar, spokesman of the Philippine Army’s 10th Infantry Division, said the surrender of the two rebels was facilitated by a barangay official he identified as Alejandro Coming. Aguilar said Ayagina immediately returned home after her surrender to take care of her mother while cousin Jimwel opted to stay with the military for safety reasons.

Lt. Col. Aguilar also divulged that human rights group, Karapatan, have been claiming that the two rebels were “abducted” by the military.

“I hope that Karapatan is simply misinformed, otherwise it is committing a sin of lying. Whatever motive it has is known to us but its actions is an attempt to disrupt our peace effort with our misguided brothers and sisters who were lured to join the NPA. To be exact in describing its action, Karapatan is actually sabotaging our peace efforts and let this be known by the public,” Aguilar said.

In another development, Col. Roberto Ancan of the Army’s 66th Infantry Battalion reported the surrender of Remelito dela Cerna Mendiola alias Valentine.

The rebel surrendered on Sunday, November 14, to the peace and development team of the 39th IB led by Corporal Caw-it in Purok 4, Barangay Andili in Mawab, Compostela Valley.

Mendiola is said to be a member of the Guerrilla Front 27 and was on a lie-low status when he surrendered with the help of barangay kagawad Ernesto Oson. BOT
