Time to stop wasting so much food

Hong Kong people may be spoiled when it comes to food. Not only is the city blessed with 10,000 restaurants offering a variety of speciaities from Nepalese to Lebanese, Brazilian to Hawaiian and from traditional Chinese favorites to fine dining at luxury hotels, food servings are usually of generous proportions.

/>When I was in still the Philippines as a university student, I often noticed that the servings at local eateries (we call them carinderias) were a bit less than we hoped for. When I came to Hong Kong, I immediately noticed that I got more food, although this seems normal as I pay more than I did back home in Davao.  On some occasions I don’t finish my servings. On others I leave a restaurant with a feeling of gluttony because I did not want to waste food while many people elsewhere are starving.

/>Leftovers are a common sight in Hong Kong restaurants unfortunately. Even with eating traditions in China that it is disrespectful if you leave food behind, locals have become accustomed to doing so. The more they abhor their overweight counterparts in America, the more they walk out from leftovers. I find this practice of restaurants (and later, consumers) disturbing, yet nothing has been done to minimize food wastage. Buffet dining, which is also plentiful in the city, encourages greed among patrons, many of whom later leave lots of unconsumed food.

/>Back in the Philippines, buffet restaurants loosely impose a “fine” if someone leaves food on his plate. More than an enforced rule, this is a deterrent so people eat responsibly. I thought this charging mechanism as reasonable. Restaurants get to serve the right amount of orders, maximize earnings, and minimize waste. In fact they can donate excess food to certain organizations. However, this practice doesn’t attract lots of followers, who try to shy away from possible lawsuits from food poisoning.  As a result they prefer to throw away those excess food items.

/>I find it hard to understand why Hong Kong restaurants serve excessive proportions of food. Isn’t it a little insulting if a client leaves the table with food still on the plate (maybe they don’t like it)? Hong Kong people are ever conscious of their bodies and many are scammed by fake slimming ads and being overweight is one of the reasons why some local women commit suicide. So serving them too much food doesn’t serve seem to serve any purpose. Well, I don’t run the business and definitely know less than these restaurateurs.
