Have been trying to avoid blogging about Thanong, but well translating PAD statements and ASTV Manager articles is time-consuming and what is the point when we already have Thanong’s writings in English.
/>In response to Thanong’s editorial entitled “Suchinda’s objection tips balance of power” (Good to know a former coup leader who himself was pardoned is the tipping point in objections to a pardon), Political Prisoners in Thailand offers some interesting commentary and then distills the basic theory of the editorial:
- Suthep is a traitor.
- The army chief, who was a 2006 coup leader and who crushed the Songkhran Uprising, is a traitor.
- Surayud is likely to be a traitor.
- Sondhi and Abhisit are aligned for the side of good against evil.
- The blue shirts, who attacked the red shirts in Pattaya in April, are now allied with the reds.
- That must make Newin Chidchob, the man behind the blue shirts, a double traitor because he deserted Thaksin in December but must be going back.
- The red shirts have a plan for People’s Revolution beginning 17 August.
/>Then you also had Thanong who recently blogged:
Phriewphan [Thaksin’s brother in law] and Patcharawat belong to the same camp, whose colour is bloody red.
/>BP: Somchai removed Patcharawat as Police Chief in November last year. His brother then helped prevent Puea Thai from forming the government and the switch of the switch of the Newin faction so Abhisit would become PM. So this makes him part of the reds?
/>On Suthep, BP has already blogged Sondhi’s rant against last Friday where he criticizes some Democrats without naming Suthep in his most critical statements. However, Prachatai translates another Sondhi rant this time from Monday. Key excerpt:
He suspected that Suthep may be in the know as to who plotted the ambush. Some said that Suthep had been aware of the plot, but did not speak out.
/>While sparing Abhisit as a good man, Sondhi said the Democrat Party lacked ideology and Suthep’s behaviour was suspicious.
/>When asked by the co-host of the programme about the government’s slack response to the red shirt petition campaign, he said that he had the impression that Suthep was extraordinarily close to Thaksin, as he observed that Suthep did not want to speak about Thaksin, and vice versa.
/>There are links between the two men, one of which is a woman nicknamed ‘Ngoh’ who works for Thaksin. She has been a link between them since Suthep was the Minister of Transport. Another is Suthep’s man whose name Sondhi did not want to reveal for now.
/>‘Today Suthep is in charge of police affairs, but the revocation of Thaksin’s police rank has been going nowhere,’ Sondhi said.
/>He said that he had never wanted to play politics, but he had to because the Democrats were ungrateful and always provoked the PAD. And some Democrats conspired in the assassination attempt, as they thought that without him the PAD would weaken, or else would grab votes from them.
/>BP: Sondhi and Thanong really see no distinction between red, blue, or green.
/>btw, Suthep’s family has donated* 12,000,000 Baht to the Democrats this year (a quarter of all donations and easy the largest). Obviously, this is not a definitive sign that he is going to abandon the party, but he runs things behind the scenes. He engineered Abhisit’s rise as party leader and then as PM in conjunction with Newin and the military.
/>*Worth read that post in its entirety.
