New Typhoon Categories

typhoon-signals  Whether we blame global warming or not, typhoon season is coming to us earlier than before. No typhoon is coming up in the horizon yet, but we sure have to become used to typhoon signals in April or May. A typhoon’s violent wrath, ironically, converts Hong Kong into a virtual ghost town as businesses and schools are suspended and streets are deserted. I somehow know what to do after dealing with Pabuk, Hagupit, Prapiroon and Kammuri, but sometimes I thought that forecasts were inaccurate and numerical assignments are meaningless.

/>The Hongkong Observatory has come up with new categories in addition to the 1,3, 8, 9 and 10 numeric signals assigned to incoming typhoons. New categories will now be “typhoon”, “severe typhoon” or “super typhoon”.
