As the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) celebrated 50 years of computing innovations last week, digital device users around the world reflected on just how far we have come in the past half-century. Since their first generation, built around vacuum tubes in the late 1940s, computers have exponentially shrunk in size and gained in power thanks to the advances of computer science. This observation, known as Moore’s law, describes the rapid technological changes that allowed chip performance to double every one to two years since 1965.
With the development of integrated circuits in the 1960s, hundreds of components were able to be placed on a single chip, once again making computers more powerful, cheaper, and accessible to a much larger audience. This was also the beginning of multitasking – for the first time more than one program could share a computer’s resources.
Fast-forward to 2014 and children are taught computer programming from the age of five as part of the national curriculum in the UK. As they progress they learn how to create and debug programs to accomplish specific goals, understand computer networks and algorithms, as well as get to know the different hardware and software components that make up computer systems.
