Science education’s popularity has grown over the past few years, resulting in increasing numbers of students taking physics at school. In everyday life, science has been restored as a valuable, awe-inspiring subject, and the image of scientists has also shifted from ‘geek in a lab coat’ to ‘cool’, with public personalities such as Professor Brian Cox and shows like the Big Bang Theory attracting new audiences. A popular Facebook page sharing science discoveries, experiments and fun facts has attracted almost 16 million fans, showing the accessible and entertaining side of science.

It’s not all about fun, of course, but scientists do share a motivation to improve the world we live in and thanks to the technologies available to them today, scientists make new discoveries all the time. From water purification and the prevention of disease to food preservation and irrigation technologies, scientific discoveries shape our everyday life – sometimes in ways that we don’t think about.

Scientists around the world use research and experiments to solve problems on every scale: from those that obviously affect our lives, such as finding new ways of diagnosing cancer early – to those we may not always understand the value of, such as creating matter from light. Each discipline has its use, and each new discovery its application.

As research fosters new discoveries, so do the educational hubs where leading experts teach aspiring scientists and work alongside them, providing students with the latest knowledge. Universities around the world now compete to provide the best facilities and resources to attract the best scientists and students in a range of disciplines.

Sciences attract people from all backgrounds who enjoy solving problems and bringing practical solutions to the world around us. The UK Government recently announced that more skilled graduates were needed for the sectors of science and engineering, proving there is no shortage of job opportunities for graduates.

Although some areas may attract more attention – biology for instance often makes headlines on topics such as cloning and stem cells – there’s much more to science than just the one subject. Prospective students looking to study abroad for their science degree should take advantage of the wide array of offerings and really investigate to find the program that will truly suit their interests. Chemistry is always a popular topic, chosen by those with interdisciplinary interests, as it also incorporates biology and physics and offers many professional avenues.

The offer of science programs at university extends far beyond those, however, with degrees available in computer science, environmental science, astronomy, veterinary science, and many others – truly enabling students from a broad range of backgrounds to specialise in the area of their interest. The new College of Sciences at NC State University was launched just under a year ago and is home to the physical and chemical sciences, the mathematical and statistical sciences, the biological sciences and the earth-system sciences.
