In the next three years the HGK Basel will be building and renovating buildings at their new campus site, Dreispitz, on the fringe of Basel. It will not only be new quarters for the college, but also will be an entire art and design environment with studios, museums, apartment housing, restaurants, a radio station and events space. It will be the first time since the founding of the HGK Basel as part of the FHNW university system, that all the students, faculty and departments will finally be together. The following images are a taste of what is to come.

The development of a new cultural urban space in a very old city has attracted great interest from all over. Here a projection from the Copenhagen Architect/Design company Bjarke Ingels Group TRANSITLAGER

At a Science Slam, each competitor has ten minutes to present his/her research topic to the audience and win their support. Participants can come from all areas of science, from particle physics to social sciences, from history to art theory. The medium of presentation is free and can range from a more traditional talk, to a dance choreography, a stage play or a self- composed song. Everything is allowed to win the votes of the audience, in whose hands it is to decide who leaves the stage as winner. Daniel R. Müller, MAS Visual Communication Institute, won last year. His theme was “Feeling Rhythm instead of Recognizing Order”. In his presentation/demonstration he explains how we understand and experience “Rhythm”. Although his presentation is in German, it can be enjoyed purely visually and acoustically. He is the second person in the video; the first person is the emcee.

The lecture series in the Visual Communication Institute is a joint effort between students, teachers and the design community in Central Europe. They take place late Wednesday afternoon every 2 to 3 weeks. Over the past few years since the series has been taking place, we have seen all kinds of designers and people who are involved in and on the fringes of Design. Over the next few days we will be posting a number of links to some of those who have come by to talk us. They may be interesting for you as well! We are certainly looking forward to the coming series 2012. This ends the school lecture series information. If you are interested you can find the complete list of lecturers at the school website: The Basel School of Design and soon the coming program 2012-2013 will be online.

We tip our hat to 2 institutions that help to inform and better the world of design. First off, Neshan Magazine, 10 years old, one of the finest printed and edited design magazines around today. It was born in 2002 and went to press for the 1st issue in 2003. Secondly, Rene Wanner’s Poster Page, a one man non commercial website dealing with posters, poster exhibitions, auctions, book reviews, links to other poster sites and lots of information and images for all of us to rummage about in. It is entering its 15th year online. Thanks to you both!

It was developed for Graphic designers, Visual Communication designers and Media designers, with a bachelor’s degree or an equivalent degree with professional design experience. It is entering its fifth year and has already earned recognition for the quality of the education. It seems only yesterday that the first students presented their thesis projects in the diploma exhibition 2009. Here you can meet them.

Undergrad students and graduates from the area of Interaction studies in the Visual Communication Institute are working on final preparation for their “medial wall”. The project together with the department store Manor in Basel is an interactive and reactive work on the window façade of two sides of the building. It will begin this week and continue for 6 weeks. Particular emphasis was given to the discussion of cultural importance of architectural lighting scenarios in a city environment. And, whether this short-term event could have a longer lasting role in Basel.

Among many goals of design education in Basel, one is “learning how to learn”! Learning how to learn means learning from and through what you do, what you think, what you see, because our environment is changing and challenging us daily. This is what makes the design profession for all designers of every age such a dynamic living experience.

The Rhine River runs through the center of the city of Basel making a right turn from a westwards to a northwards direction before going on into France and Germany. It is not only a landmark of the city but also its main orientation signpost and guide. Therefor it is no surprise to see the Rhine as a central element in a series of design studies for a new city orientation system executed by students of the international MFA program in Visual Communication. Besides analyzing what and where information needs to be located in the city, they made proposals for the design of the 3-dimensional elements as well as the intuitive/interactive map information panels.

Displays in Dialogue: The Exhibition and the Book by Lena Friedli and Michael Huebner

This project examines the relationship between art, exhibitions and books. Exhibitions can be understood as the premise of display, which can refer to each other in different ways. In order to grasp the multilayered relationship of the two displays, they are contrasted in a series of exhibitions. The situations thereby engendered to challenge conventional structures, dismantling them in order to show new possibilities of art.

Photographing. Deliberations on the Photographic Design Process by Svetlana Marcenko

The specifics of photogenesis manifest themselves in the technical nature of image recording and account for the distinctiveness of photographic design. This is composed of a complex network of related decisions which occur both before and after triggering. This project attempts to illustrate the stages of this process and discuss the factors which influence it.

Creating Individual Experience through Non-Linear Narrations in Moving Images by Safak Korkut

Film narrative is a way of understanding data under the illusion of occurrence; the mind is capable of building a set of rules as a narrated story even if the pieces do not belong to each other. This thesis project aims to achieve a narrative structure that generates an indefinable number of stories, thus the individual combination of the videos becomes the key for the creation of a narrative.

Investigating Imagination as a Cognitive Act by Indre Grumbinaite

Images and imagination are considered to be natural to our thinking. Imagination is traditionally regarded to be the mental capacity for experiencing, constructing or manipulating concepts, sensations and mental imagery. Focusing on imagination as the capacity to form mental images, this project explores its role for visual perception and image creation.

Exploring the Three-Dimensional Reality of an Image by Yo Oun Choi

This project is an exploration into a three-dimensional reality of an image by analyzing the phenomena of human visual perception. By showing a two-dimensional image that is created in an unconventional way, visual focus shifts from what viewers see to how they see. Thus, the experience allows viewers to reflect on their own seeing habits and questions how their visual system works.

Besides the participation at Open Day Abroad, the trip to Lisbon was an exceptional chance to visit the Biennale and have an insider’s perspective on the events. Under the theme Useless, the 6th edition of EXD questions the idea of use and its absence through various lectures, conferences, open talks and impressive curated exhibitions. Many exhibitions located all over the charming city of Lisbon were of a great interest and an effort was made to see as many as possible in one short week.
