University of Derby Fashion Designer in Alfa Romeo Young Designer Award Finals

One of our Fashion Studies BA (Hons) students has seen her designs reach the finals in the UK’s largest student-run charity fashion show. Courtney Blades is a third year Fashion Studies student, and her designs will be featured in the finalists’ show of the 2013 Alfa Romeo Young Designer Award competition on Saturday 16 February.

Courtney explains, “There is a lot more to designing even a small collection of five outfits than most people realise.” Fiona Hawthorne, the University’s senior lecturer for the course adds, “This is a very prestigious competition and Courtney has done exceptionally well, going up against other great young designers from around the UK, to reach the final five.”

Our Fashion Studies BA (Hons) course has scored 92 percent student satisfaction in the last National Student Survey, and, like Courtney, you will be given the chance to exhibit your work both nationally and internationally. There are excellent placement opportunities too, for example one of our students has worked as a product developer for menswear, underwear and loungewear for BC International.

During your time on the course, you will also take part in lectures and seminars from visiting guest speakers such as Sports Direct; Sports Direct previously challenged our first year students to come up with some bold new designs for their own sports and leisurewear brands.
