It’s all Greek to me… Well, not really.By Kings College London School of Arts and Humanities Feb 08, 2013 11:19PM UTC
A photo I took on my year abroadUpon reading that I studied Modern Greek as part of my undergraduate degree and then glancing confusedly across at my photo, you may have asked yourself, ‘why on earth did a pale, red-headed English looking girl choose to study Modern Greek?’ Well… the answer is that I learned Greek from a very young age. My grandma, who I always called γιαγιά (giagia), was Greek. Not just any Greek, she was a Constantinople Greek (always held in high esteem by Greeks who always react positively to me telling them this). She and my half Greek mum found out about a local Greek school and decided to send me there when I was four. I had not yet started English school at that time, and therefore Greek was the first language I learned to write.
