I was doing some archival work and came across this gem of an editorial titled “Berlin Lion Taming” from the New York Times on November 23, 1932.

That is a remarkable article – entirely misguided. Hitler earned nothing; coming to power by simply murdering opponents as Stalin did.

I read the article and took away something entirely different. It seems to me that the writer is delighting in what (s)he believes is Hitler getting the position that he craved but with so many restrictions that he will be little more than a figurehead. Of course, things turned out much differently.
