In the US, finding a university that offers a high-value education is all about pinpointing public schools that can contend with their private counterparts. The University of California, Irvine is a perfect example. It is listed as a Public Ivy university and easily ranks as one of the finest public schools in the nation.

However, this is still a public university, which means its prices don’t approach those of private universities. For prospective students in Asia, UCI offers one of the most attractive value-for-money options in the market today.

This is a large school, home to nearly 30,000 students and more than 1,000 faculty members. The programs on offer are comprehensive, with more than 80 undergraduate degrees. Another 50 master’s and 45 Ph.D. programs are also available.

While competitively priced, UCI’s value proposition isn’t just about money. It is recognized internationally for its outstanding quality of research, scholarship and teaching, and for its commitment to diversity.  UCI focuses on developing the whole person during a student’s educational journey, with particular emphasis on character and leadership excellence, in addition to academic and research excellence.

UCI Academics and Rankings
The University of California, Irvine is one of the most highly esteemed universities in the continent. Major university rankings listings place the school in the top 50 worldwide. It is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities and was listed as the 13th-best public university in the nation by U.S. News & World Report.

Narrow the scope to specific schools and programs within UCI, and the figures are more impressive. The MBA program receives regular praise and was lauded by the Financial Times for graduates’ ability to secure job placements within three months of graduation. The Sierra Club has praised UCI for its sustainability record, while the Center for World-Class Universities at Shanghai Jiao Tong University placed it on the list of the 50 best schools in the world.

UCI operates eight undergraduate and two graduate schools. Its research programs are particularly well-regarded. Many programs on campus turn out important scholarly works, patents and innovations. The component to a UCI education is especially attractive to international students, many of whom end up traveling halfway around the world for the chance to contribute.

The researchers here are in a class of their own. Three have received Nobel Prizes: one for physics and two for chemistry. Grad students work under internationally renowned faculty. At the same time, they have ample opportunity to pursue their own accolades and achievements through the research that they carry out on campus.

International students interested in studying at UCI can get all the information they need from International Admissions.

A High-Value Option
Given its rankings, strong reputation for research and inclusion as a Public Ivy school, you’d expect a UCI education to be priced well out of the average student’s means. This is a public school, however, and its tuition and fees weigh in well below those of Ivy League schools like Harvard or Yale. In short, students receive one of the best educations in the continent at prices that rival hundreds of other public universities in the US.

The required tuitions and fees for in-state undergraduates is just under US$12,000. International enrollees have added expenses, but the total cost still falls well under what would be expected from an Ivy League university. Furthermore, more than 60 percent of all UC Irvine undergrads receive some sort of financial aid or assistance.

The school’s reputation and affordability are major draws for international students, especially at the graduate level. Asian students make up nearly half the student body, though the majority of these are California residents. This presents an interesting situation for Asian students from overseas, who can find elements of their own cultures integrated into the American Asian communities around Irvine.

Student Life
As far as student life is concerned, this is an enviable place to study. UCI is located in Orange County, one of the most idyllic communities in the United States’ west coast. Irvine was named the “Safest City in America” by the FBI five years in a row. Opportunities for outdoor activities abound thanks to the beaches, mountains and deserts in the area. And there’s so much more on offer a short drive up the coast in Los Angeles.

There are plenty of activities and organizations for students to get involved in at UCI. The Greek community is particularly rich here, with 21 fraternities and 26 sororities in operation. Several of these take on a multicultural approach to campus living. Beyond this, around 500 student clubs and organizations are on offer.

The University of California, Irvine regularly wins awards for its student housing setup. The Vista del Campo student apartment complex is the campus showpiece and has received accolades from the National Home Builders Association. With this in mind, on-campus student housing is in high demand among the student body. The university guarantees at least two years of on-campus housing to all incoming freshmen. Graduate students are also well taken care of in this department.
