By Asian Correspondent Oct 20, 2011 6:00PM UTCUniversity College Falmouth is an established institution with a long list of achievements to its name. It was the highest ranked University College outside London according to the Guardian’s Good University Guide 2012, and was ranked in the Top 10 in the UK for Arts and Design by the Sunday Times Good University Guide 2011. University College Falmouth offers some of the finest courses in art, design, media, performance and writing around, and it wouldn’t be wrong to say that it is one of the UK’s leading specialist arts institutions.
The institute is based in Cornwall, which provides a great location and an inspirational atmosphere to cultivate creative talents. It has invested large amounts of money in building its infrastructure and creating new facilities for its students. It has invested more than £10 million in its Academy for Innovation and Research (AIR). Another £10 million is being spent on constructing a state-of-the-art learning and resources facility named The Exchange, which will be open to students by the summer of 2012. It will be shared and managed by University College Falmouth and University of Exeter and will be a 2,554-sqm centre at the heart of the Tremough campus at Falmouth. Another £39 million has been invested in a brand new Performance Centre which was inaugurated only last year.

More than 15 external organisations and businesses work in partnership with University College Falmouth and its students. The journalism programmes are particularly popular with students as well as media companies that are looking to hire fresh graduates. University College Falmouth graduates find employment with some of the best and most eminent broadcast companies such as BBC, Reuters, Channel Five, Sky News, Al Jazeera and Sky Sports, to mention just a few names.
Academics
Courses are offered in arts, design, media, performance and writing. The facilities, industry partnerships, infrastructure and high standards of teaching at this institute are already well known. The institute has also utilised online learning as a tool for flexible learning. Students can access most of the study material online if they so wish. A virtual learning experience can be gained through The Learning Space which offers round the clock access to video lectures, course material and any resources that the student may be looking for.
Undergraduate Courses
An interesting selection of BA (Hons) degrees is served at the institute. Instead of offering plain vanilla courses in creative industries, the institute offers specialised programmes. So rather than studying just photography, you can choose whether you want an undergraduate degree in Marine and Natural History Photography or in Fashion Photography.
Masters Courses
University College Falmouth offers full-time and part-time MA degrees and a Creative MBA degree. The institute has long offered an impressive selection of programmes in media, art and design. And with the Darlington College of Arts merger some years ago, students now have a broader range to choose from—including courses in theatre, choreography and music. The masters programmes have a phenomenal success rate with students entering employment with the biggest names in the creative industries.
Research Opportunities
University College Falmouth is renowned for its research, which is deemed important and relevant at national and international level. A range of M.Phil and PhD degree options in focus areas such as Digital Economy and Sustainable Design are available. Research groups are active in fields of Art, Nature and Environment; Autonomatic; Connected Creative Communities and so on.
A full-time research programme generally runs for 2-4 years and can also be done part-time. An active and enthusiastic research culture encouraging interdisciplinary approach and excellent supervisors makes learning here an enjoyable experience. Regular visits from international researchers keep the mind inquisitive and the availability of numerous lectures, seminars, readings and performances allow for a healthy exchange of knowledge. Exchanges across institutions through the year facilitate the broadening of horizons and the sharing of new ideas and knowledge.
International
University College Falmouth has a clear vision of becoming a leading arts university and has already invested over £100 million in developing world class facilities.
