Established in 1956, Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) has been a leader in higher learning in Hong Kong for over 50 years. Not only is HKBU reputed for its academic achievements, it is also known for its firm commitment to providing ‘Whole Person Education’ by promoting intellectual, cultural and social skills outside the classroom, in addition to training the minds within.

HKBU consistently holds its own amongst other Asian institutions in all the rankings that matter.  It was ranked 45th in the 2010 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Asian University Rankings and 111th in the 2010 Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

Reflecting a diverse student population, HKBU offers world-class, innovative undergraduate, taught postgraduate and research postgraduate programmes across an impressive range of disciplines. All programmes tailored to prepare students for the challenges of a globalised knowledge-based economy.

Fittingly, for a university based in Asia’s thriving financial hub, places in HKBU’s business programmes are particularly sought after.

School of Business
HKBU’s School of Business offers a choice of internationally recognised business education programmes that aim to shape the business leaders of tomorrow. Not only does the School of Business offer a world-class education, it also encourages innovation, vision and ethics among its students.

Business students at HKBU join an enviable network of fellow students and alumni. These are the business leaders of today and the future, and enrolment in HKBU opens doors that no other university can unlock.

HKBU offers a range of business education programmes for undergraduate students, but it is its postgraduate options, and particularly its MBA programme, that really stand out from the crowd.

The School of Business continues go from strength to strength. In April 2010, it joined the top 5 percent of business schools worldwide to receive full accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International (AACSB), the largest and longest standing specialised accrediting agency for business and accounting programmes.

MBA Programme
Launched in 1994, the HKBU MBA programme has firmly established itself in the marketplace as a China-focused MBA programme. The programme is designed with a general theme of international business, balanced by a China focus. The curriculum balances the need for executives to acquire a global mindset, while it also appreciates the thrust to understand how to do business in mainland China. The programme covers a diverse range of management and business disciplines consisting of 18 courses – 14 core courses and 4 advanced elective courses.

The programme is the first MBA in Hong Kong to offer a focus on China business. Besides the competitive China focus, it also incorporates the practical “live learning” activities – the business field study, study tours, client-based consultancy project – which provide students with the much-needed hands-on experience and knowledge to become an all-round business executive standing in the forefront of the business world. The School’s strong network of mainland business leaders, students, graduates and academics enables students to interact with and learn from business leaders in Greater China.

HKBU provides an inspiring learning environment, but it also ensures that students can branch out, gain practical experience and discover new things. The Business Field Study places students with a ‘client company’, for which they perform a consultancy-type project. Students have taken placements in a number of cities across China, giving them a unique insight into business in Asia’s most populous country.

While HKBU’s MBA focuses on business in China, it also prepares students for life in the global marketplace. This, of course, is taught in the classroom, but is also enhanced by the international exchange programme. This programme provides a valuable opportunity for students to enrich their international exposure as well as to enhance cross-cultural communication and managerial skills.

The MBA programme has been extended to China since 2000, including Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Nanjing, Zhuhai, Yuedong, Shantou and Dalian. Over the years, HKBU has fostered over 2,000 MBA graduates.

MBA Graduate Testimonials

Ma Hing Ka, Patrick (MBA 2010) – Head of Sales Asia, Oerlikon Solar Ltd.

The MBA programme has irrigated my mind of drought. I have been enriched by the ‘whole person education’ with an escalation in my intellectual knowledge and personal skills so as to set out my career on a better platform. Having been recruited now as the Head of Sales Asia in a reputable Swiss company specialised in solar technology immediately after the completion of the MBA programme, I have to express my deepest thanks to the persistence of all the professors and staff in HKBU and their patience with me.

Shea Kwok Leung, Simon (MBA 2010) – SCM Manager, Celistica HK Ltd.

The overall MBA journey at HKBU was an adventure for me. I am from an engineering background and it was pretty challenging for me to study the business content at the beginning. Fortunately, my MBA teammates formed a powerful coalition and it was our teamwork that helped us break through the difficulties and achieve greater success. Besides the classroom learning, I cherished the extraordinary experience with my teammates, on and off during the MBA programme. The genuine sharing and support from them are unconditional.

Campus life
Even though HKBU has a relatively modest student population of about 9,000, it is a lively pace to study. This is partly due to the university’s commitment to Whole Person Education, a firm belief that what students learn in the classroom constitutes only one part of their development at HKBU. Students are also encouraged to take part in all kinds of extra-curricular activities, ranging from sports to artistic endeavours. Add to this the 80 clubs and societies active on campus, and it can be seen that there is something for everyone here.

As you’d expect, HKBU has all the facilities you would expect from a top modern university. State-of the art sports facilities, art galleries, conference facilities, and restaurants and bars are all part of the package at HKBU. For those who want to live on campus, there are four student residence halls available, which provide a comfortable, safe and friendly landing pad for new international students. In addition, there is limited off campus housing in Kowloon City, and Ma On Shan.

Student Support
Arriving in a new city and a new university can prove daunting for many students. HKBU’s Office of Student Affairs has dedicated staff to ensure that new students make the transition to their new life and new learning environment as quickly and easily as possible. The office offers all kinds of practical help and advice, such as new student orientation, information on grants, loans and scholarships, career advice, counselling, accommodation, and more.

Living in Hong Kong
Hong Kong is one of Asia’s great metropolises, offering a blend of Eastern and Western culture that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. The bright neon signs floating above crowded streets, 24-hour restaurants with large LCD TV screens and the “organized chaos” of rush hour are all quintessential Hong Kong. It’s not a bad thing though. Once you overcome this initial blow of awe and excitement, you’ll delight in immersing yourself in to what Hong Kong has to offer.

Much like HKBU’s campus, the city of Hong Kong itself is a cosmopolitan hive of activity, and it abounds with attractions and things to do. And although it is home to some 7 million people, the city is surprisingly easy to get around. From taking in the stunning views from Victoria Peak to the bustling Ladies Market, this Eastern gem never fails to entertain and delight.

Because of its multi-cultural nature, it is easy for international students to settle in here, whether they are from nearby Asian countries, or halfway across the world. Hong Kong’s colonial past means there is something to suit everyone in this bustling metropolis.
