Phone call from the fugitive: Indonesian Demokrats implicated in corruption
By Chalid Nasution Jul 20, 2011 4:53PM UTCMEDAN, Indonesia – Nazaruddin, former Indonesian Demokrat Party Treasurer and number one fugitive in Indonesia for corruption made a phone call the Office of Metro TV Tuesday where he revealed his involvement and other politicians in corruption. Most of the people he named are his colleagues in the Demokrat Party.
There was one name Nazaruddin mentioned many times – Anas Urbaningrum, Chairman of the Demokrat Party – who he said has been involved in bribes and the misuse of State Budget.
In the dialog that lasted nearly 15 minutes, Nazar also revealed that his departure abroad was ordered by Anas Urbaningrum. At that time, Anas Urbaningrum told Nazarrudin to come back when Indonesia has a new government.
“Anas said to me, if the (corruption) issue explodes I should run away to Singapore. After the situation gets more calm, you can come back to Indonesia,” said Nazarrudin.
Where is Nazar today? During the phone call broadcast on Metro TV, he said he was “somewhere safe”. The fugitive also said, “If the Corruption Eradication Commission can prove a flow of funds comes into my account, I will be back to Indonesia.”
Nazar also pointed to his rival Andi Mallarangeng in the corruption scandal. Currently, Andi Mallarangeng serves as Minister of Youth and Sports.
Nazaruddin was named as a suspect in a corruption case on development housing for athletes in the SEA (South East Asian) Games in Palembang, South Sumatra, Indonesia. Since his escape, Nazaruddin still sends Blackberry messages to his Demokrat colleagues and to his lawyer, OC Kaligis. The content of his messages briefly mention names of other politicians who have also received funds from him from the case of the SEA Games.
This does not bode well for the state of Indonesia Demokrat Party.
