Britain sets time frame for Sri Lanka crimes probe
By AP News Jun 15, 2011 5:45AM UTCCOLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — The British government says it’s shocked by a documentary that purportedly shows Sri Lankan troops committing war crimes, and it’s putting more pressure on Sri Lankan officials to investigate.
Foreign Office Minister Alistair Burt says in a statement that he was “shocked by the horrific scenes” in the documentary aired by Britain’s Channel 4 television late Tuesday. He says unless the island nation shows progress with a probe this year, Britain will support any international effort to press the government to act.
The documentary includes video that appears to show civilian deaths and prisoner executions. Channel 4 says the video was obtained from ethnic Tamil civilians and Sri Lankan soldiers, but the Sri Lankan government says the video is fake.
