The violent crimes division of the Seoul Central Prosecutor’s Office announced on May 19 that it had arrested without detention 33-year-old Mr. M, the son of a former Israeli ambassador to Korea, on charges of smoking marijuana.
Mr. M is accused of smoking marijuana near a nightclub for foreigners that he operates in Itaewon at approximately 1am on April 28 after receiving 0.5 grams of it from another foreigner.
Mr. A [typo in original] was caught at the scene after police received a report and arrived. Mr. M’s father was the Israeli ambassador to Korea in the mid-2000s, and was known in diplomatic circles as a friend of Korea. While living in Korea, Mr. M graduated from a college on the American base in Yongsan, and after his father left his post he continued to stay in Korea and operate the nightclub.
An official with the prosecutor’s office said that “we are investigating whether Mr. M may have also engaged in smuggling, but we have found no cause for such suspicion… we have communicated to the Israeli government the arrest and investigation.”
