Summer is arriving and sun is hitting hard. People started barbequing around. Last Thursday we had barbeque party for the entire afternoon in the lab balcony. That was my first barbeque for this season. That’s a good experience with the lab mates. Currently some of our class students are doing our junior research project and some are doing elective Science to business course. After this, it would be the summer and during this time most of the students either continue in the labs as they did their junior research project or switch labs based on their interests. Interesting thing here is that in summer one can claim the pay if you work in a lab. If the professor has proper funding in the lab then one should be paying the students during the summer. There is also an organizing body, which monitors the problems regarding this issue at KI. That is called Ombudsman. It’s a part of MF.

As I already mentioned in my previous blogs regarding my part time work in a lab. I was working at Department of Biophysics and Biochemistry at KI Solna Campus. It’s been tiring working everyday till 9 or 10 pm in the night. I was able to gain significant experience with protein purification methods, cloning and expression methods and also crystallization methods. But due to unfortunate reasons I was forced to stop working with crystallization of a protein but I can do some biochemistry work for the protein. This was a big shock at KI for the first time. All the effort had been in vain. To cap it up, I got another shock of me not getting paid during in the summer even though if I work full time. This is due to lab funding issues. Initially they promised me for the pay after 6 months of stay in the lab but now due to funding issues I will not be paid during the summer. So I am searching for new labs that can pay me and at the same time I can give some productive work to the lab.
