In the 2010 school year 90% of graduating students at most universities received at least a B average, and 74% of undergraduate students received at least a B, demonstrating that grade inflation remains the norm.
The Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology () published on the 31st its evaluation of grading at 192 four-year universities nationwide using statistics from the .
According to the statistics, at 190 four-year universities, across all courses 37.8% of students received A’s and 36.2% received B’s, a total of 74%. 18.3% received C’s, 3.5% received D’s, and 4.2% received F’s.
Of August and February graduate students from 185 four-year universities, 35.4% had GPAs of A and 54.9% had B’s, a total of 90.3% receiving at least a B.
Compared to the undergraduate students and the graduates from last year those percentages were down 0.2% and 0.8% respectively, and the rate of receiving C’s was higher, but it appears that the university grade bubble has not burst because that still represents little difference.
The rates of graduates having GPAs of at least B were 94.4% at public universities against 89.3% at private universities, and 91.4% at those in the capitol region vs. 89.6% at those outside the capitol region.
By major the rates were 96.8% in education, 91% in the humanities, 90.7% in the natural sciences, 89.8% in sociology, and 88.6% in sports education.
Considering each university’s top possible GPA (either 4.5 or 4.3) as 100, Myungshin University had the highest at 91.92 and Dongyang University had the lowest at 66.95.
The GPAs of graduates at the main universities were 80.7 at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, 79.53 at Pohang University, 79.31 at Konkuk University, 77.12 at Hanyang University, 77.01 at Sungkyunkwan University, 76.83 at Dongkuk University, 75.19 at Kyunghee University, 74.6 at Sogang University, and 73.28 at Joongang University.
The rates of undergraduate students obtaining As at main universities were 49.8% at Seoul National University, 49.7% at Pohang University, 36.1% at Chungang University, 35.3% at Sungkyunkwan University, and 33.7% at Sogang University.
