The Seoul City Office of Education announced on March 4 that it will recall all of the foreign language textbooks recently found to contain the wrong expression “Sea of Japan” for the East Sea.
The textbook at issue is “Schrieben Macht Spass”, a German language textbook that had received a government subsidy and been jointly published the Office of Education and Seoul National University Press, and was approved by the Office of Education at the end of last year.
The Office of Education explained that although a map on page 7 of the textbook labels the East Sea as the Sea of Japan, it had not been discovered because there were many small maps.
An official with the Office of Education said that “after recalling the 197 textbooks which were to be used at three foreign language high schools in Seoul, Gwacheon, and Busan this year after an agreement with SNU Press, we will make the correction… we are very sorry that we carelessly caused this issue.”
Second article in Korean is at this link, covering pretty much the same ground.
