US envoy on North Korea visits BeijingBy AP News Jan 06, 2011 3:30AM UTC
BEIJING (AP) — The U.S. envoy on North Korea is in Beijing to pursue an end to the standoff between North and South Korea and get insights into China’s recent talks with the North’s reclusive leader.
The U.S. Embassy says Stephen Bosworth will meet Thursday with Vice Foreign Minister Zhang Zhijun and Senior Representative for Korean Peninsula Affairs Wu Dawei.
Bosworth is expected to ask China for information on last month’s talks in Pyongyang between North Korean leader Kim Jong Il and Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo, Beijing’s top foreign policy official. China has come under growing pressure to push ally North Korea to change its behavior.
North Korea will be a key issue during Chinese President Hu Jintao’s visit to Washington later this month.
