Indonesian serial killer sentenced to death
By AP News Dec 23, 2010 7:29AM UTCJAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — An Indonesian appeals court has sentenced a man to death for mutilating at least four street children.
Baikuni, who uses a single name, was arrested in January after the remains of his last known victim, a 9-year-old boy, were found in a river in the capital.
The East Jakarta District Court initially sentenced him to life behind bars.
But prosecutors appealed to the Jakarta High Court, alleging the 50-year-old may have killed, sodomized and mutilated as many as 14 victims and deserved the most severe penalty possible.
Karel Tuppu, a court official, said Wednesday that judges had agreed, sentencing him to death.
Baikuni was known as “Dad” on streets because he was said to have a soft heart for children, giving many of them temporary shelter.
