World Cup celebrations produce first death in South Korea

A high school student was killed in an auto accident while returning home from a street celebration for the World Cup.

At approximately 12.40am on June 13 16-year-old A was returning from a World Cup celebration held on the road in front of Hakseong High School in the Shinjeong-dong area of Ulsan when he was struck and killed by a Hyundai Sonata driven by 30-year-old Mr B.

A member of the police said, “the driver Mr B crossed the pedestrian walkway in front of Hakseong High School while moving through the rotary towards the courthouse and hit A, whom he was unable to see but knew there had been an accident, and fled the scene before being caught by police.”

The driver Mr B has a history of drunk driving for which his license had been suspended, investigators said.

Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the accident by interviewing Mr B and friends of A who were at the scene.

The headline needs rephrasing. This makes it sound as if no one ever died in Korea prior to World Cup celebrations.

Anonymous 11:08′s observation is spot on. This could have happened to the poor kid had he been returning home from a study room, too.

I think people lighting themselves on fire to invoke the Red Devil spirit is more inline with actual World Cup related death, though I suppose lack of sanity would be the real culprit in those situations.

That’s a little bit of a mistranslation. The original article actually says that Mr. B was drunk at the time of the accident, and his blood alcohol level was enough to get his license suspended. It didn’t say anything about whether he had a history of drunk driving.

Also, “fled the scene before being caught by police” is incorrect. The article says that he did flee the scene, but then turned himself in to the police.
